about

Kia ora, my name is Samantha Patel.

I am a registered Psychologist and have been working in this field for 20 years.

I live in New Zealand and have several layers of intersectionality and privilege. To name a few, I am cisgender, educated and able-bodied. As an Indian, LGBTQ, solo mum raised in London I continue to be socialised into The Whiteness Matrix™. I navigate this on a daily basis with the support of a higher power, my friends and whanau (family). Some of whom are living and some of whom have come before me.

In my work life, having worked at senior levels within the government and corporate sector I have lived experience of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion; both in and out of action.

I am unashamedly committed to supporting wellbeing and building inclusive communities.

The Whiteness Matrix™ workshops aid to assess, understand and identify strategies for diversity, equity and inclusion and anti-racism in your organisation

Diversity Group

The Whiteness Matrix™ is a framework based upon science, theory and lived experience. It provides a tangible way of identifying the specific types of thoughts, feelings and actions that can be supporters or barriers to a healthy and inclusive culture.

This series of workshops begin with a starter module delivered with options of a full day of face to face (preferred option) or with changing alert levels it can also be delivered through a number of virtual sessions.

It is a group-based programme of learning which supports participation whilst recognising that the inner work required will look and feel different for everyone.

Whilst the content, delivery methodology and examples used are specifically customised, the workshops are focused on these areas and differ according to the participant’s role/s in the organisation (senior leaders, tier one leaders and team members).

The starter module includes:

  • The Whiteness Matrix™
  • The visibility and invisibility of discrimination, prejudice and bias
  • Awareness and Consciousness in practice
  • My Choices

The Whiteness Matrix™ is then further integrated into workshops to support building DE&I as a cultural practise. These workshops include topics such as :-

  • Managing Conflict
  • Uncomfortable Conversations
  • Stakeholder Connection
  • Navigating Change

The starter module requires completion before further workshop participation.

Have you ever thought…

  • I am unsure what the right thing to do is… I’m worried I may offend someone?
  • I’m not even sure if racism and discrimination are so relevant in Aotearoa, New Zealand?
  • Why isn’t the conversation ‘All Lives Matter’?
  • We all have the same opportunities in Aotearoa so what’s the problem?
  • I work hard and no-one gave me any extra help, so I don’t see the fairness?

All of the above are human reactions and can be reasonably expected from people of ALL colours, who have been exposed to and socialised into Western countries and associated forms of media.

At the same time, the ongoing discrimination and prejudice faced by people of colour and marginalised groups are indisputable. The human right to be treated with dignity and respect is ignored, and our basic emotional need to be seen, heard and valued, is rubbished.

In the workplace this can lead to conflict, disconnection, lack of productivity and more.

So what to do?

Develop your understanding using an evidence based and lived experience framework – The Whiteness Matrix ™.

My workshops will systematically assess your workplace to identify and teach strategies that can support giving everyone a proper fair go.
